Light and darkness of faith
Synopsis
The article engages in a theological reflection on the question of the certainty or clarity of faith (lumen fidei) and the uncertainty or darkness of faith (obscuritas fidei). It first presents the theological reasons why faith is certain and lasting. These reasons are related to God’s authority and the metaphysical concept of substance. It then presents the theological reasons why faith is uncertain and obscured. These reasons are related to the object of faith (mysteria fidei) and the perception of the human person, who receives „excessive light” in faith (St. John of the Cross). Finally, the theological conclusions are presented.
