Ecumenism as an Opportunity to Reveal the Uniqueness of Christianity. A Theological, Historical, and Cultural Perspective
Synopsis
The contemporary ecumenical movement, a response to the historical divisions within Christianity, is often perceived solely as a quest for the institutional unity of the Churches. This study offers a proposal for a broader view of the indicated issue, according to which ecumenism constitutes a unique opportunity for a deeper and more complete presentation of the essence and uniqueness of Christianity. Intra-Christian dialogue conducted with respect for otherness, together with the common witness of Christians, becomes a unique chance to deepen the shared deposit of faith, whose Center is the Person of Jesus Christ and His salvific work. The presented issue will be analyzed in three dimensions: theological (ecumenism as a hermeneutic of faith and a school of Christocentrism), historical-spiritual (ecumenism as a return to the sources towards the building of full visible unity among Christian Churches and Communities), and missionary-evangelizing (ecumenism as a credible presentation of Christianity in a pluralized world). The conducted research allows for the conclusion that authentic ecumenical dialogue is the best way towards deepening the awareness of one’s own identity, and through the service of reconciliation, it becomes a living sign of eschatological unity, which constitutes the uniqueness of the Christian message.
