Synopsis

The aim of this chapter is to analyse emotional disorders among young people and to assess how social support systems respond to this growing phenomenon from an interdisciplinary perspective. The chapter adopts the method of reviewing the scientific literature in psychology, sociology, psychiatry, and social policy, with a particular focus on reports from recent years. Emotional disorders in adolescents, such as depression, anxiety disorders, self-harm, and adjustment disorders, are a growing phenomenon and have a significant impact on the functioning of the individual and his/her social environment. Findings from the literature review emphasise the need for an integrated support model based on collaboration between psychologists, educators, social workers, doctors, and schools. An interdisciplinary approach, although it may be organisationally difficult, increases the effectiveness of intervention and prevention activities. This chapter contributes to the scientific discussion by synthesising the problem and pointing out practical directions for the development of emotional support in school and community settings.
