Jan Skawiński’s monograph is the result of extensive archival and library research. The author presents the biography of Major Tadeusz Furgalski “Wyrwa” (1890–1916), regarded as one of the most talented members of the Riflemen’s Association and officers of the Polish Legions. His skills and personal bravery were confirmed by the posthumous award of the Virtuti Militari Order. This biographical sketch attempts to reconstruct the life of this remarkable figure, from his childhood, through his patriotic activities and service in the Legions, to his death in 1916. While studying at the Jagiellonian University, Furgalski became involved in the Riflemen’s Association, rising to high-ranking positions within its Kraków structures. During the Great War, he held a number of important posts in the Legions, including command of the 4th Battalion, later the 1st Battalion of the 1st Infantry Regiment, and the 2nd Battalion of the 5th Infantry Regiment.
