Synopsis

The chapter by Dorota Kumorek discusses the consequences of prenatal exposure to alcohol, leading to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The author highlights the lack of systemic solutions in Poland that could provide adequate help and support to families affected by this issue. FASD is characterized by developmental, neurological, and behavioral deficits that impair social functioning in both children and adults. The current preventive and diagnostic measures are insufficient, and the local support system does not provide comprehensive assistance. The author emphasizes the need to implement a nationwide support system that includes diagnosis, therapy, and parental support for children with FASD. The author also notes the recent amendment to the public health act, which established the National Centre for Addiction Prevention, but there is still a lack of dedicated preventive and therapeutic programs for individuals affected by FASD.
