Church and Churches in the Łódź historical and theological perspective

Synopsis

The author presents a selection of examples, set against the historical background, that illustrate the ways in which the religious denominations in Łodź lived and worked together in the areas of charity, worship, the construction of temples, education, and care for the moral welfare and health in society. Łodź seems to have fostered an environment in which communities that were otherwise distinct in terms of nationality and religion were able to engage in abundant nonpartisan initiatives which intertwined across boundaries. As such, they constitute a uniquely interesting example of ecumenical coexistence and may, to some extent, provide a blueprint not only for the current ecumenic endeavours but also for a successful coexistence and collaboration in today’s society which, although more homogeneous than that of the old Łodź, appears to be more riddled with internal conflict.
