Synopsis

The crucial message of the Encyclical centers around the diagnosis that human reason is denied the capacity to reach the truth beyond phenomena. Some postulates are then formulated to remedy the situation. The Encyclical shows that there is no severance between reason and faith as well as between philosophy and theology, for the two are founded on the Truth. Against this background, the paper argues for the relevance (after 25 years) of the Encyclical by indicating some contemporary trends that fall under the criticism of Fides et ratio.
