Theological Dimensions of Communication of Faith With Secular Culture

Synopsis

The communicative understanding of Revelation and the concomitance of the inculturation of faith promote the development of a theology of communication. The source of communication is the mystery of Communication and Communion of the Holy Trinity, which is also the source of the sending of the Son and the Holy Spirit creating the Church’s communication environment. Orders of nature and culture are inseparable. The Church accepts and respects all cultures, but reserves the right to criticize them. The Christian faith has always been realized in the dialectic of hooking into cultural data and resisting the prevailing obviousness. Today, this is done under „critical contrast” or „critical compromise.” The most fundamental issue is whether Christ should determine the position of the culture, or culture is to determine the position of Christ. There are also calls for correlationist theology or a „value distillation” strategy, as well as the danger of „iconoclasm” fearful of affirming beauty and high culture. So the situation is difficult, requiring discernment and hope, that the culture of the world can be transformed by Christians through the power of faith and love.
